The Modern House: Multi-Purpose Entertainment Center

We are in a hurry to speed up the pandemic’s heavy-handed time with screens. By taking ourselves out of the artificiality of screens, we need to turn to activities that require more patience and effort than we do. We spend so much time on social media that our minds reach a terrible saturation with the concentrated knowledge like a pill we get from there. It is like devouring fast food. Fast food gives us an abnormal sense of satiation with its volume of carbohydrate content, in fact, it is not to eat, it is stuff oneself.

The fast and very concentrated information we receive from social media also has such an impact on our souls. We get the feeling that we know everything we need to know and it turns into an information overload. This prevents us from finding important details that we need to see and the ability to think critically.

To get rid of this, we should give up activities that make us passive viewers and turn to activities that make us active and productive. Pandemic time gives us an opportunity to get back to our factory settings. So far, we have been living life with a great sense of excitement, running from place to place; what happened now? What’s the difference? Is there something shortage? Did our epaulets get ripped off when we did not live life gluttonously? We just had the opportunity to stop and think a little more, to rest our souls.

Some young people may engage in escape strategies in dealing with anxiety. Over-indulging in games is one of the escape strategies.

Instead of facing their own anxiety, coping with it, people immediately turn to something that gives them rapid relief, stimulates dopamine circuits, and junks them, and there they begin to relax. But this is a vicious circle, the more games they play, the more the brain wants, the more it gets used to pleasure, the harder it becomes to break the pleasure circuit.

We have to take care of everything that will turn a modern house into a cozy home. Zygmunt Bauman, the famous sociologist for the modern house, calls it a “multi-purpose entertainment center”, we enter the house and close the door outside, and enter the room and close the door to the house. Houses have become a multi-purpose entertainment center where family members live side by side physically but separate mentally.
